die neue stadtbibliothek in stuttgart gehört zu den größten öffentlichen bibliotheken weltweit.

für das von dem koreanischen architekten eun young yi entworfene gebäude wurde in einem
25-monatigen prozess die innenausgestaltung entworfen und umgesetzt. nach einer bedarfsanalyse und konzeptphase mit den leitern der themenebenen, war das ziel eine hohe aufenthaltsqualität in unterschiedlichsten zonen und bereichen für unterschiedlichste nutzer zu erreichen: keine blosse lagerung oder präsentation von medien, sondern ein leben mit den medien.
die innenarchitektur und möblierung führt die klar geometrisch geordneten strukturen der gebäudearchitektur im inneren fort.
kundenterminals sind neben büchern und medien in die raumbestimmenden regale integriert.
sonderpräsentationen finden daneben in speziellen möbeln statt. rückzugsbereiche, gemeinschafts- und kommunikationszonen wechseln sich ab.

im foyer im erdgeschoss befindet sich das “skriptorium“, eine moderne reminiszenz an den historischen vorläufer des bibliothekswesens im kloster.
daneben finden sich elemente, die in den folgenden sieben geschossen wieder auftauchen:
das “studiolo“ als thematisch verdichteter ort zur inhaltlichen auseinandersetzung; die serviceeinrichtungen, wie infotheke, selbstverbucher, computerrechercheplätze und natürlich das leitsystem.

der sich trichterförmig nach oben öffnende lesesaal wird durch die oberflächenbündig eingelassenen wandregale zu einem monumentalen raum der bücher. das regalsystem wurde speziell für diese bibliothek entwickelt.

das helle blau der gepolsterten möbel orientiert sich an der ci-farbe blau; die ebene für kinder erhält ein lebendiges grün. bodenmarkierungen codieren regalplätze, trennelemente in den regalen geben orientierung und schaffen themenbereiche.
digitale informationsstelen dienen als unterstützung zum analogen leitsystem.

the new municipal library in stuttgart is one of the largest public libraries in the world.

for the building designed by the korean architect eun young yi, an interior design concept was developed and implemented over a 25-month-long process. following an analysis of needs and requirements, as well as a concept phase involving the heads of the library’s various departments, a distinct goal was defined: to create a superior space that invited a wide range of users to engage in a multitude of activities in various zones. the idea was to create a space suitable not only for the storage and presentation of media, but one in which visitors could interact with the media. the interior design and furnishings constitute the continuation of the building’s clear, geometrically organized architectural structure.
user terminals, books and other media are integrated into the space-defining shelving units. adjacent to these, special presentations will be presented in unique furnishing elements. quiet, communal and communication zones alternate with one another.

located in the foyer on the ground floor is the “scriptorium,” a modern reminiscence of all libraries’ historical precursor, the monastic library. next to this are features that reappear on all seven floors: the “studiolo” as a thematically condensedplace for content-related discussion, and the service facilities, including information desks, public meeting rooms, computer stations for research purposes and, of course, the control system.

the reading room, a funnel-shaped space that opens towards the sky, becomes a monumental space for the books, thanks to the flush-mounted wall shelves. the shelf system was specially developed for this library.

the bright blue of the upholstered furniture is inspired by ci blue; the children’s level is characterized by a vibrant green. floor markings encode shelves, while dividers on the shelves provide orientation and create thematic areas. digital information steles serve as support for the analogue control system.
