die varianz von grün | variants of green

an der westküste . thailand | the west coast . thailand

variants of green

on the west coast . thailand

after several hours of driving through the dense rainforest, we reach the small settlement on thailand’s west coast. the imposingly threatening natural landscape at the edge of the path gives way to an inviting gesture, a harmoniously designed and staged cultural landscape.
in the tropical park small wooden huts are arranged loosely; one of these will be ours for the next two weeks. the picturesque scenery and the lush variants of green are reassuring and beautiful.
a thought, generated by my european-socialized architect’s brain, briefly disturbs the sense of well-being taking shape. is this all kitsch here? the architect briefly develops a familiar vision: the park is cleared and neatly organized; the water lily pond is cleaned and structured geometrically; the paths are straightened; the small huts are replaced by white, flat-shaped cubes, and these are best fused into a large-format rectangular block …
the vision feels strangely brutal and destructive in this context. restlessness sets in and the realization of wanting to brood further on the experience of this moment, not now, but later. i look around and think, ‘boy, is it nice here …’
