stuttgart

stuttgart

the two-story residential structure with a mansard roof sits on a steeply sloping piece of land with a southwest exposure, located on the outskirts of stuttgart. two young families were able to secure the protected site as a builders’ association. the concept of the four owners was realized within a legally prescribed framework. through cleverly nested floor plans, both dwelling units have four levels and an orientation in all cardinal directions, and are characterized by an open quality of the living areas. This is achieved through large glazed elements, which afford impressive views of stuttgart’s elevations, as well as through the seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces. the height variations create various exposed and protected spaces, which extend the living area into the garden.

the property is situated on the edge of a wooded nature reserve. the earthy, natural shades of the materials were selected with restraint in mind. the exterior is faced in pre-louvered siberian larch wood paneling. the wood’s warm brown hue connects seamlessly with the metal roof of color coated aluminum sheets. the windows are also built flush with the facade cladding. the result is an expressive structure that blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.

the atmosphere of the interior space is characterized by natural materials: the cement-gray of the load-bearing walls and ceilings made of untreated, reinforced concrete contrasts with the warm tone of the oiled-oak fixtures and stairs. These elements are harmoniously linked by the warm white terrazzo with its vibrant pattern of sanded natural stone chips in a warm yellow-brown. brass details serve as highlights.
